What should I know about traveling with pets in Italy by motorhome or caravan?

Travelling in Italy by motorhome with your dog or cat

Travelling around Italy by motorhome with your dog or cat is simple when you know the rules on documents, vaccinations and safe transport.

This guide explains the main requirements for bringing pets to Italy and helps you find genuinely pet-friendly motorhome stopovers with Agricamper.

At a glance: what you need to travel with pets

Under EU pet travel rules, dogs, cats and ferrets must meet a few essential requirements before entering Italy.

  • They must be identified with a microchip, or with a clearly readable tattoo applied before 3 July 2011.
  • They must have a valid rabies vaccination.
  • After the first rabies vaccination, you must wait at least 21 days before travelling.
  • You may travel with a maximum of five companion animals on a non-commercial journey.

If you travel with more than five pets, the movement may be considered commercial unless a specific exception applies, such as participation in a competition, exhibition or sporting event.

Italy does not allow entry for puppies or kittens under 12 weeks old that have not been vaccinated against rabies, or for animals between 12 and 16 weeks old that are vaccinated but not yet fully protected. These restrictions apply to dogs, cats and ferrets entering Italy under EU pet travel rules.

Documents for residents travelling within Italy

If you live in Italy and travel domestically with your dog or cat, your pet should be properly identified and documented.

In practice, it is advisable to carry the key documents related to your pet’s identity and health, especially when travelling by motorhome between regions or staying at campsites and stopovers.

  • A microchip registered in the relevant registry, mandatory for dogs.
  • An up-to-date veterinary health booklet, including vaccinations and preventive treatments.
  • Photos on your phone of the health booklet, pet passport if available, and microchip number.

Documents are not always checked during everyday travel, but they may be requested in the event of an incident, a complaint or an official inspection.

If you leave Italy for another EU country or return from abroad, you must also comply with international pet travel rules.

Entering Italy with pets

From another EU country

If you travel to Italy from another EU country, or from certain equivalent countries and territories, your pet must have:

  • a microchip
  • a valid rabies vaccination
  • a European Pet Passport

This also generally applies to travellers coming from countries and territories such as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City, where recognised pet travel documentation may be used for entry into the EU.

From a non-EU country

If you travel to Italy from a non-EU country, your pet must normally have:

  • a microchip
  • a valid rabies vaccination
  • an EU animal health certificate issued by an official veterinarian no more than 10 days before entry into the EU

Depending on the country of departure, a rabies antibody titration test may also be required before travel.

The journey must be non-commercial, which means the animal travels with you, or with a person authorised by you, and you reunite within five days.

Pet safety in a motorhome

In Italy, pets may travel in a motorhome as long as they do not interfere with the driver or compromise safety.

Even when the law does not prescribe one single transport method in every situation, safe restraint is essential.

  • Use a secure carrier or travel crate, properly fixed in place.
  • Alternatively, keep the pet in the rear area of the vehicle, separated by a suitable barrier or safety net.
  • Do not allow a dog or cat to move freely near the driver or sit on a passenger’s lap while the vehicle is moving.

Checklist before travelling by motorhome with your dog or cat

Before departure, make sure you have everything needed for safe and comfortable travel.

  • Microchip registered and contact details updated.
  • Rabies vaccination and booster shots up to date.
  • Parasite prevention suitable for the areas you plan to visit.
  • Carrier or restraint system for safe travel.
  • Lead, possible muzzle, food and water bowls.
  • Fresh water and your pet’s usual food.
  • Waste bags and a small pet first-aid kit.
